Why Persian Rugs

Persian rugs have the longest history dating back 550 B.C.E. and have originated from the Persian Empire (aka the Achaemenid Empire) that lasted from approximately 559 B.C.E. to 331 B.C.E. At its height, the Empire encompassed the vast regions that are modern-day Iran, Turkey, Egypt, and parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan. These countries are today known as "rug belt" countries that are known for Oriental rugs.

It is widely accepted that initially some of the Persian artisans emigrated from Persia to other "rug belt" regions and continued their art of weaving.

From the West to the East, and from political leaders to significant religious leaders, Persian rugs have been depicted as a status symbol and opulence throughout millennia (even to this day).

In the European arts, you may see over and over again monarchs and aristocrats portrayed with Persian rugs. Here are a few:

Tip: Less is more. Keep the field of the rug empty and blank as shown above. Less design, less distraction. The color is soft and elegant. What color would you pick for your Persian rug?

(This rug above is oversized. This rug is Nain. A Nain rug and bright colors go hand in hand. If you ask us for a quote, an estimate is likely to be U$ 2.0mio. We had a client in the recent years who had requested us to make one for U$ 2.0mio. When completed and delivered to him, he sold it for U$5.0mio. For a rug like above, minimum four artisans collaborate for a few years to hand-weave one like the one above. For your additional info, a huge rug like above can easily weight 80kg, 180lbs. Delivery cost via FedEx or DHL alone can cost U$ 7.0-8.5K. We will find an air cargo company for a fraction of the this estimate.)

Above: President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu in Jerusalem on May 22, 2017. This rug is Tabriz.

For a Tabriz rug, a 100% wool is nice. If you'd like a shiny highlights, some silk highlights on a Tabriz will give it another dimension especially with proper lighting.

This is another Nain rug. Natural wool-color is such a signature of a Nain rug. If you'd like a bright color for a warm feel, Persian Nain is the way to go.

They are on an antique Persian Heriz Serapi. From the West to the East, Persian rugs are a must-have. Get the highest quality that you can afford; it will serve you and your child lifetime.

Above: Red rug behind them looks nice. It is not too reddish at all. Get a red rug that is a bit more reddish than the one above; and over time as it is exposed to sunlight and foot-traffic, the color will elegantly fade to become like the one above. When purchasing a Persian rug, think long term because it will last a long time. I'd like to imagine how the Persian rug to appear after decades.

For a red rug, my recommendation is to go for a sharper, darker red than above and enjoy the freshness if you buy a new rug. Let it age and let the red fade a bit. If you want a red just like above, get a vintage or antique. You will need a larger budget.

The wooden wall, hardwood floor, and the Persian rug age well altogether. Class builds over time; you cannot spend to buy it overnight. Well, you can buy an antique, I suppose.

Persian rug with a geometric medallion. The motif and color are most suitable for a meeting with generals. This rug design is quite formal and establishes order.

Lastly, as you see all the photos above, Persian rugs show up over and over again throughout millennia in historical moments. Persian rugs have been tested over time and are proved to be timeless. In terms of capital overlay, a Persian rug requires a substantial amount up front, but it saves you more over time. Get one for your office, living room, or your personal library. Buy one for your child. She or he will grow up with class - thanks to your wise purchase.
